When the pigs get over 120 pounds in size, they are not ready to eat, but have become too big for the Foodspa. A 150 pound pig can do a considerable amount of damage to a Foodspa.

As 2002 draws to a close, we are having to tether the larger pigs to the Foodspa using a rope.  If possible, we would like to build four pig domes in Los Guayuyos in January, 2003

The pig dome opens up new possibilities for the Los Guayuyos project.

bulletKeep pigs from destroying Foodspas
bulletKeep pigs from getting loose and killing chickens
bulletCreate larger compost piles (in the US this is called dry-stacked bedding compost)
bulletMake it possible to raise 4 crops of pigs a year instead of 2. (2 1/2 months in Foodspa when the pigs are small. 2 1/2 months in Pig Dome.)
bulletProvide centralized feeding prior to shipping pigs to market
bulletProvide a secure place for feed storage in La Cucarita and El Montazo in addition to the storage shed in Los Guayuyos.

The possibility exists that in village closer to a major pig producer, the pig producer could be enlisted to help the villagers by turning them into "contract pig finishers."  Contract pig finishing is common in the United States. The contractor is typically responsible for providing the housing facilities and the labor.  The pig producer provides management, pigs, feed and transportation.  Using a combination of the Foodspa and the Pig Dome, the villagers could be gainfully employed as contractors. They would be paid in chicken feed and pig meat.
