Safety Update

May, 2000

We received our first report of an animal getting into a HenspaTM. A dog jumped on the roof of a sunroom, got inside and killed 4 chickens. We have responded by doubling the number of staples holding the wire in the roof to the sunroom frame and by adding an additional support member to a piece of the unit that broke. To date, this is the only report of this type of incident we have received.

May, 2002

7 4-week old chicks were killed in New York. They were new to the coop and were not sleeping upstairs. There was not visible sign of entry and they may have been attacked by a weasel. The owners set a trap in an attempt to capture the predator.

Protection from Animals

Mistsy2.gif (38303 bytes) Your hens are generally safe around dogs, cats and wild animals that want a shot them. The wire mesh is strong. A raccoon could not get his paw though it. And, since the coop is moved frequently, most animals do not have enough time to dig through the turf under the coop.
Our large lab mix, Mitsy, loved to pace around the coop, just dreaming of a way to get in. She had to give up. Even her professional digging skills are unsuccessful on turf where the coop is moved every day!
